A total of 41 subjectswere selected with symptoms considered to be chronic. Two groupswere formed – one to receive Chiropractic treatment and the otherreceiving no Chiropractic care.Assessments were done to categorize symptoms, measureCervical (neck) Range of Motion (CROM) and Head RepositioningAccuracy (HRA). The HRA test measures the ability of the individual'svarious nervous, skeletal and muscular systems to repositionthe head in a neutral posture following active movement. The treatment each subject received involved adjustments andrehabilitation exercises. It should be noted that when the study began there were no significantdifferences between the treated patients and the controlsubjects in terms of age, sex, subjective pain intensity, range ofmotion, or head repositioning. Both groups were tested and interviewed again following a 5-week period. Results showed that the Chiropractic treatment patients exhibitedsignificant reductions in pain and improvement in all HRAaspects that were measured. The control group did not show anyreduction in pain and only one subject had improvement in oneaspect of HRA. No real difference was detected in CROM.The findings of the subject, simply stated, prove thatChiropractic helps people with long-standing neck pain.SOURCE: http://www.chiro.org/research/ABSTRACTS/Improvement_After_Chiropractic_Care.shtml

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=85&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
HEARING IMPROVED WITH CHIROPRACTIC

Anyone who knows Chiropractic history remembers that the veryfirst adjustment over 110 years ago by Dr. D.D. Palmer restored thehearing to Harvey Lillard after 17 years of deafness. A recent studysupports this result.Dr. Palmer examined Harvey and determined he had a bone out ofplace in his spine. With the gentleman's permission, Dr. Palmeradministered what was the very first purposeful and intentionalChiropractic adjustment. Mr. Lillard's hearing was restored as aresult. Now, a 2006 test reported in Chiropractic & Osteopathy showedwhat could be considered quite a remarkable success rate when aChiropractic adjustment was administered to a test group of 15 peoplewith documented hearing loss. Each of the participants was hearing tested prior to any treatment, and then received just a single Chiropractic adjustment.Subsequently, each had their hearing tested again. Most of the participants experienced significant hearing improvementusing a standardized testing process known as the Ventry andWeinstein criteria. Tests were made and results reported in differingsound volume ranges, known as decibels (dB).At the level of normal conversation of 40 dB, 6 of the subjects hadhearing restored, 7 showed improvement and 2 had no change. That is87% of the patients showing improvement. At the level of quiet conversation but louder than a whisper of 25 dB, 11 patients or 73% had improvement. The results of this single test do lend definite credibility to the originalstory of Dr. Palmer's success. According to researchers, this documented case study provides support to the fact that hearing improvements may result with Chiropractic care.SOURCE: http://www.kidchiropractic.com/index.php?file=/nyk/currentNewsletter.htmlChiropractic & Osteopathy. www.chiroandosteo.com

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=83&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
FOR BEST COST SAVINGS, TURN TO CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS FOR NECK PAIN!

Neck problems account for considerable pain and stiffness that canlead to work absenteeism, disability and use of healthcare resources.Various conservative interventions have been proposed for treatingneck pain, but few scientific evaluations have included any analysis oftheir cost-effectiveness.A study published in the British Medical Journal compared theeffectiveness of manual therapy, physiotherapy and general practitionercare in reducing neck pain of 183 suffering patients. Manual therapyincluded manipulation of the joints in the spine and work on themuscles; physiotherapy consisted mainly of exercise; generalpractitioner care included counseling, education and analgesics.Outcome measures included perceived recovery, intensity of pain, functional disability and quality of life; direct and indirect costs weremeasured to determine mean costs between groups, overall costeffectiveness, and cost-utility ratios. Patients completed cost diaries forone year, providing data on direct healthcare costs of practitioner care;additional visits to other healthcare providers; drugs; professional homecare; and hospitalization. Direct non-healthcare costs included out-of pocket expenses; paid and unpaid help; and travel expenses. Indirectcosts (lost of production attributable to work absenteeism or days ofinactivity for those with or without a job) also were evaluated. Results: Manual therapy was the most effective of the threetreatments, with 68% of patients demonstrating recovery after sevenweeks, compared to 51% in the physiotherapy group and 36% in thegeneral practitioner group. These differences were significant at six-month follow-up. Manualtherapy also proved significantly more cost-effective than the other twointerventions at one year, with total costs approximately one-third thecosts of either physiotherapy or general practitioner care.SOURCE: http://www.chiropracticresearchreview.com/crr/article.php?id=80

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=84&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
LOW BACK PAIN SUFFERERS RESPOND TO EFFECTIVE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS

A recent study in Rome, Italy shows the effectiveness of Chiropractictreatment for the reduction of low back pain and sciatica involving discprotrusion. The study done among 102 adults pointed to more effective pain relief for participants whose treatment included Chiropractic adjustments as opposed to those receiving only simulated actions. Each of the participants in the study had moderate to severe acute lowback pain, moderate to severe radiating pain in one leg and MRI evidence of disc protrusion in the spinal segments considered associated with the pain. Researche’s collected detailed information regarding the pain history of each participant, range of motion in the affected areas and data regarding each person's overall quality of life.Subjects in the active treatment group received soft tissue manipulationfollowed by Chiropractic adjustment with the purpose to restore movement to the area consisting of two vertebrae, a disc and surrounding structures. Those subjects in the simulated treatment group received soft muscle pressing that was similar to manipulation but without the specific patterns of rapid thrusts to the area administered.During the treatment period, patients in both groups were asked to keep a diary to track the number of days they were in pain, the number and type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) they took, and the number of drug prescriptions involved. Results at the end of this 6-month period showed a significant differencein the number of pain-free subjects. The active treatment group was 55% free of radiating pain compared to only 20% in the simulation group.Additionally, 28% of the active group was free of local pain compared to 6% in the simulation group. Another benefit of the treatment was the reduced use of pain medications in the active treatment group.Researchers concluded that the patients receiving active Chiropracticmanipulations enjoyed significantly greater relief of local and radiatingacute low back pain, spent fewer days with moderate-to-severe pain and consumed fewer drugs for the control of pain.SOURCE: Dynamic Chiropractic Online. http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/24/06/19.html

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=82&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
BRITISH STUDY PROVIDES ANOTHER WIN FOR MANUAL THERAPY: “MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR NECK PAIN”

A study published in the British Medical Journalreported on a study of one hundred eighty-three patientswith neck pain who were divided into three groups. Costs for each method of treatment werealso evaluated, along with costs such as lost wages, homecare, drugs, travel costs, etc. Patients kept diaries to tracktheir pain, costs and recoveries. At the end of seven weeks of treatment, manual therapywas the winner; 68% of the manual therapy groupdemonstrated recovery after seven weeks, compared to51% of the physiotherapy group and 36% in the generalpractitioner group. At the six-month mark, manual therapy proved to bemuch less expensive than the other two forms oftreatment. The mean cost for manual therapy was reportedas $402 per patient. And because these headaches can be sohard to handle, the pharmaceutical industry presents us withstronger and stronger medications to help manage the pain. Now, fortunately, Chiropractic adjustments have shown effectivenessin improving pain and reducing reliance on drugs, as reportedin a recent study. In the study, 127 migraine sufferers were treated with eitherChiropractic or a non-Chiropractic placebo treatment.Subjects in the manipulation group demonstrated statistically significantimprovement in migraine frequency, headache duration, disabilityand medication use. Twenty-two percent of the study participantsreported more than a 90% reduction in migraines after twomonths of spinal manipulative therapy, with approximately 50%more participants reporting significant improvement in severity ofmigraine episodes.SOURCE: http://www.chiropracticresearchreview.com/crr/article.php?id=700

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=81&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
NEW STUDY COMPARES MEDICAL AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR LOW BACK PAIN: CHIROPRACTIC BETTER ACROSS THE BOARDS!

Almost everyone in America suffers from low back pain at onetime or another, and each know how incapacitating the pain canbe. A recent study has just shown that Chiropractic providesmore improvement in pain and return to function for chroniclow back pain over the most common types of medical care. The study followed the results of 93 Chiropractic patients and45 medical patients with chronic, recurrent low back pain.Chiropractic treatment included spinal manipulation and otherforms of treatment commonly used by chiropractors. Theaverage number of visits to chiropractors by this group: 4.The medical treatments often involved the prescription ofanti-inflammatory agents; patients averaged one visit each tofamily medical facilities.Patients treated by chiropractors showed better overallimprovement and satisfaction than medically-treated patients. Atone-month followup, there was a 36% improvement in painquality among Chiropractic patients, while the group of medicalpatients reported a 29% deterioration. Pain severity improved31% among Chiropractic patients but only 6% among medicalpatients. The slow progress of development was also evidenced by the fact that he did not walk until he was almost two.During his preschool years, Justin went through occupational, physical and developmental therapy in an effort to progress his motor skills. Although he did progress somewhat, he still lagged behind others.Every six months he would have to go to the neurologist for an evaluation. Each visit his doctor would press to have additional testing done to determine the cause of the ever-present malady. Since the testing would be painful for Justin and since it would not provide a cure but rather just additional information as to the nature of the disorder, we opted to wait. As he matured, Justin progressed in his muscle development. However, due to the disorder, he remained behind in motor skills for a child his age. Then, when Justin was six and a half, Dr. Edger Ruble of the ParkwoodChiropractic Clinic took an interest in Justin’s condition. Dr. Ruble offered to see Justin to work on him in an effort to improve his overall condition in muscle tone and skeletal structure. The doctor began by assessing Justin’s overall condition. He then began seeing the boy twice a week for spinal manipulation. He also put Justin on a light but progressive weight-training program. The first thing we began to notice was that Justin was not tiring out during play as quickly as he typically did. Next, we began to notice he was able to do things with greater ease, such as climbing our back yard fence. When we would miss a week or two of his treatments with Dr. Ruble, we realized he would once again complain of muscle pain. Justin continue to be seen by the good doctor. This past fall when Justin went for his yearly visit to the neurologist, shewas surprised to see his progress. She said that Justin was doing remarkablywell and that he probably would not need the additional testing that she recommended. We are grateful to Dr. Ruble for his interest in Justin and his skill as a healer. It is an on-going process, but the result of the doctor’s compassion, talent, and on-going work, is that we have seen Justin improve to the point where there is little difference between what he can do and what a child without this problem can do. The effects of Chiropractic care have made a significant dif-SOURCE: Justin’s Parents

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=78&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
STUDY FINDS THAT FOR CHRONIC SPINAL PAIN NOTHING IS BETTER THAN CHIROPRACTIC

A study published in Spine magazine compared Chiropractic,Acupuncture and medication for the treatment of spinal pain thathad persisted for longer than three months and found the bestresults came from Chiropractic.A clinical trial was done at an Australian Public Hospital fromFebruary, 1999 to October, 2001. In this study 115 patients wereenrolled at the Multi-Disciplinary Spinal Pain Unit and weretreated with either Chiropractic spinal adjustments, needleAcupuncture or medication. The patients were given a healthsurvey question-naire and a number of standard diagnostic tests atthe beginning of the clinical trial and again at two weeks, fiveweeks, and nine weeks into the treatment. The clinical trial found that while all three showed someimprovement in the health survey questionnaire, Chiropracticachieved the best overall improvements in almost all of theobjective tests, as well as the highest percentage of patientsbecoming pain free – 27.3%.Acupuncture was found to be twice as effective as medicationand got a better result than Chiropractic on one of the diagnostictests.Medication was found to be the least effective of the three byany standard of the study. The study was “Chronic Spinal Pain: A Randomized ClinicalTrial Comparing Medication, Acupuncture, and Spinal Manipulation”by Lynton G. By the endof the intensive phase of care, the patient had significant decrease inthe frequency and intensity of his leg symptoms and complete relieffrom his low back pain. His improvements were maintained with follow-up visits.Had the patient taken the usual medical route for this condition, here’s the “treatments” he would have been likely to encounter, with no more than a 62% chance of success:Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen; Analgesics, such as acetaminophen; Cortisone injectionsinto the spinal cord; A lumbar brace; Surgery to increase the openingthrough which the nerves travel or to fuse spinal segments. The possible side effects of the surgery include:“Death, hemorrhage, gastrointestinal problems, urinary tractproblems, respiratory complications, cardiac problems, postoperativeinfections and central nervous system problems.”SOURCE: http://www.chiropracticresearch.org/News_case_study_chiropractic.htmThis case was published in the May 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and PhysiologicalTherapeutics (JMPT); http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cd/spinsten/stenosis/sten03.htmlhttp://www.spinalstenosis.org/laminectomy.php

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=77&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
CHIROPRACTIC PROVEN TO REDUCE THE COST OF HEALTHCARE

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine foundthat patients who had an availability to Chiropractic care saved asignificant amount of money over patients who did not.700,000 people with Chiropractic coverage in their insuranceplan was compared to 1,000,000 people whose insurancecoverage was limited to traditional medical treatments. The totalhealthcare cost for the Chiropractic group was 12% lower. They spent 28% less for back pain, saving $16 million. There was a 23% reduction in the use of X-rays and 37% lessspent on MRIs.There were 41% fewer hospitalizations for back pain and 32%fewer back surgeries. If all of America had Chiropractic coverage, the total savingsin healthcare expenses would come to more than $61 billion peryear.SOURCE: http://jama-archives.org/cgi/collection/complementary_and_alternative_medicine?page=2; Legorreta AP,Metz RD, Nelson CF et al. While the ‘medical’ children had a history of fewerchildhood diseases, they also had received a considerably higherpercentage of childhood immunizations (94%), as compared tothe ‘Chiropractic’ children (25%).The ‘Chiropractic’ children showed a 69% otitis media-freeresponse, while the ‘medical’ children only had a 20% otitismedia-free response.Pediatricians were more likely to feel that every child wouldhave been on a course of antibiotics at least once, and somesuggested that almost 100% of children suffer from otitis media, whereas many chiropractors reported that children under theircare had never been on antibiotics The occurrence of infectious diseases was significantly less among the Chiropractic sample. The results of the study confirm the benefits of theChiropractic model of healthcare on the health status of children.SOURCE: http://www.chiro.org/research/ABSTRACTS/Comparative_Study_of_the_Health_Status.html

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=75&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
RELIEF FROM KNEE PAIN SHOWS WISDOM OF CHOOSING CHIROPRACTIC FIRST

Nowadays, Derise Rawls visits chiropractor Dr. ChrisBeckwith on a regular basis for knee pain. She started seeinghim after a tear in the cartilage of her knee had kept her in painfor two years.“I couldn’t walk my grandchildren outside. I couldn’t walkwith my husband,” Derise said. She tried the usual avenue oftreatment first: pain medication. “I was living off of those and itwasn’t getting any better.”Derise used Chiropractic care as a last result – but manyother people choose it first. “More and more we’re gettingpeople who don’t want to go through other forms of treatment. They want to try things that perhaps are less invasive first andthey’ve heard good things about this type of treatment,” saidDr. Beckwith. Since Chiropractic care involves neither drugs norsurgery, it has far fewer side effects and does not requirerecovery times after treatment like surgery does.“Chiropractic is incredibly safe, even compared to somethingas simple as an OTC (over-the-counter medication). When wesay things like this, we don’t mean there isn’t a place for eitherover-the-counter medication or prescriptions because of coursethere is,” said Dr. Beckwith.Derise has found that she won’t have to have surgery for herknee because after treatment with Dr. Beckwith, she’s pain-free.“I can walk with my grandchildren. I can walk with myhusband. I don’t have to sleep with a pillow under my kneesbecause of pain. I don’t have to take any more pain medicine. Ihave my life back,” said Derise.SOURCE: http://www.wqad.com/global/story.asp?s=3320785&ClientType=Printable

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=72&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
AMERICA TURNS TO ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE TO IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH – AND MANAGED CARE PROVIDERS FOLLOW

More and more consumers are choosing alternative forms ofhealthcare, with such options as Chiropractic, Acupuncture andmassage leading the way.A survey done in 2004 measured the increase in popularity.Thirty-six percent of U.S. adults now use some form ofComplementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) services. Withthis level of popularity, managed care providers are beginning tofollow the trend by providing more coverage for CAM services.More than 60% of health plans now include CAM services as acovered benefit or offer “affinity” programs in which membersreceive discounts to CAM providers.Employers are eager to utilize CAM services to keep theirworkforce on the job after a study was released October 2004 inthe Archives of Internal Medicine that showed the benefitspossible. The study stated that when employees had Chiropracticcoverage, they had 41% fewer hospitalizations for back pain thanemployees without Chiropractic coverage. And they had 32%fewer back surgeries and significantly lower utilization rates forCT/MRI scans and x-rays than other employees without thiscoverage.SOURCE: http://www.managedhealthcareexecutive.com/mhe/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=146114

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=73&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
CHIROPRACTIC OFFERS FAR MORE BENEFITS THAN SIMPLY RELIEVING BACK PAIN

Far too many people still believe that Chiropractic care isn’tnecessary unless they’re suffering excruciating headache or lowback pain. But heseemed lifeless. His eyes were dull and empty. He did not talk. Christophehad been diagnosed as having ADHD and was presently taking Ritalin®.“Although they would rather not have had him on a drug, the parentswhere relieved by the ‘diagnosis.’ Finally, it explained why their son wasdoing so poorly in school to the point of failing, why he used to alwaysforget things and seem so disorganized.“Although he had also been diagnosed as having ADHD, Cedric wasdifferent. During my first consultation, he was running around, climbingthe walls despite attempts by his parents to control him and the fact thathe was already on a high dosage of Concerta®, the equivalent of Ritalin ina time-released form. After falling on the ground, he went into one of hisfrequent temper tantrums.“In the US, the rate of children taking psychotropic drugs – essentiallythe psychostimulant Ritalin – increased from 0.9 per 100 children in 1987to 3.4 per 100 children in 1997, corresponding to 493,000 childrentreated in 1987 and 2,158,000 in 1997.“For the brain to grow properly and optimally, it requires propernutrition of two kinds: ‘nutritional’ nutrition and ‘neurological’ nutrition.Who else than the chiropractor, expert at understanding the properfunction of the spine – and how the latter controls our brain – and theimportance of a good diet, can offer those children and their families thehope of improved quality of life in a natural, non-drug dependent, empowering way.“Christophe and Cedric are now functioning without drugs betterthan they did before. Christophe can concentrate better, his grades haveimproved. He is now calmer and does not have temper tantrumsanymore.”SOURCE: http://www.jvsr.com/researchupdate/detail.asp?ID=885

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=69&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
STUDY FINDS THAT CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT MORE OFTEN BASED ON GOOD SCIENTIFIC BASIS, COMPARED TO MEDICINE

A study published in January 2003 investigated whether ornot Chiropractic treatments were based on sound, properlyconstructed scientific studies. In a clinic of an American-trained Chiropractor in NorthernSpain, 180 consecutive patient visits were analyzed. Thepractitioner involved did not know beforehand that hertreatment was going to be so analyzed, ruling out practitionerbias. The presenting complaint of each patient and the respondingtreatment were evaluated and compared to the validity of thestudies supporting that treatment. The supporting studies werecategorized according to the level of supporting evidence used:Category I for a treatment based on good-quality clinical trialevidence or Category II for a treatment based on no or poortrial evidence. The author of the study noted that the complaintspresented by these patients were quite similar to the complaintspresented in two large, population-based studies of Chiropractorsand their patients in North America. The study found that 68.3% of all the treatments were basedon good-quality studies. When this percentage was compared tosimilar studies done on different medical specialties, Chiropracticwas found to have the highest proportion of care based onproperly done scientific studies.SOURCE: http://www.fcer.org/html/Research/IOMtestimony.htm; Journal of Manipulative Physiol Ther 2003:26;000

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=70&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD’S TRAGIC AND UNNECESSARY DEATH ILLUSTRATES THE DANGERS OF INVASIVE MEDICAL CARE

Ben Kolb was an active seven-year old, the captain of hissoccer team. Then Ben had ear surgery performed to handleeustachian tube blockage. When scar tissue formed, Ben wassent back to the hospital for outpatient surgery to remove thescar tissue.During the simple elective procedure, two drugs were mixedup and as a result, Ben was injected with adrenaline instead of alocal anesthetic. His heart rate rocketed, his blood pressuresoared and he went into a coma. He died soon after. An invasive medical procedure involves entry into the livingbody (as by incision or by insertion of an instrument). Anyinvasive procedure is accompanied by risk – even that of death.Chiropractic is completely non-invasive and has been shown tobe effective in the prevention of the kinds of ear infections andproblems that result in a recommendation of ear tubes. Asreported in Health Report Issue 53 of Volume 9, Dr. JoanFallon, a chiropractor who practices in Yonkers, New York, haspublished research showing that, after receiving a series ofchiropractic adjustments, nearly 80 percent of the children treatedwere free of ear infections for at least the six-month periodfollowing their initial visits (a period that also included maintenancetreatments every four to six weeks). The greatest tragedy is the possibility that no surgery at allmay have been needed in this young boy’s case.SOURCE: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/daily/0.1136.36000000000114725.00.html;http://www.amerchiro.org/media/tips/ear_chiropractic.shtml, Singer Health Report Vol 9, Issue 53

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=68&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
CHIROPRACTIC CARE CREATES IMPROVEMENT IN FIBROMYALGIA PAIN

Fibromyalgia is a common cause of widespread pain, characterized by physical findings of local tenderness in manyspecific but widely dispersed sites. Most patients withfibromyalgia remain symptomatic for several years, with noknown cure yet identified. Themost common reason children visit their pediatricians is for treatmentof ear infections, resulting in 24 million office visits a year, or35% of all visits.Data taken from U.S. health plans between 1996 and 2000related to antibiotic use in children aged 3 months to 3 yearsshowed that each patient received an antibiotic prescription anaverage of 1.89 times per year.Recent research has shown that chiropractic can prevent thenecessity of either antibiotic use or ear tubes.Dr. Joan Fallon, a chiropractor who practices in Yonkers, NewYork, has published research showing that, after receiving a series ofchiropractic adjustments, nearly 80 percent of the children treatedwere free of ear infections for at least the six-month period followingtheir initial visits (a period that also included maintenance treatmentsevery four to six weeks).Use of chiropractic instead of traditional treatment means thatchildren avoid the general anesthesia required for insertion of thetubes; it also means that the bacteria causing the ear infection doesnot become resistant to the antibiotic.SOURCE: DEATH BY MEDICINE, Dr. Gary Null, Ph.D., Dr. Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D., Martin Feldman, M.D.,Debora Rasio, M.D., Dorothy Smith, Ph.D., page 7.;http://www.amerchiro.org/media/tips/ear_chiropractic.shtml

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=66&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
PREGNANT? CHIROPRACTIC AND ACUPUNCTURE OFFER MORE COMFORTABLE PREGNANCIES AND EASIER BIRTHS

There are many complaints that can occur during pregnancyand birth, and Chiropractic and Acupuncture offer solutionswithout the dangers that medications might bring.A recent study published in the British Medical Journaldescribed the benefit that Acupuncture offered 394 pregnantwomen in Sweden. All the women in the study complained ofpain in the area of the pelvic girdle, the circle of bones includingthe pelvis and sacrum. Women in the study were separated intothree groups and were given:1. Standard treatment consisting of a supporting belt and home exercise program2. Standard treatment plus Acupuncture3. Standard treatment plus stabilizing exercises meant to improve mobility and strength. The groups receiving Acupuncture and the stabilizingexercises experienced less pain in the morning and evening andthe Acupuncture group reported the least discomfort overall. And if a mother-to-be is told that she can expect a breechbirth, she would be wise to head for a Chiropractor familiar withthe Webster Breech Turning Technique. The late Dr. LarryWebster developed a Chiropractic technique that lessens stress inthe pelvic area, permitting many babies to turn before birth. Asurvey of Chiropractors in the U.S. and Canada found thatdoctors had treated 112 mothers with breech babies with thistechnique resulting in 102 cases where the babies turnedproperly for birth.SOURCE: http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/chiropracticcare.html;http://www.chiropracticresearch.org/NEWS_chiropractic_technique_helps_tur.htm;http://www.forbes.com/lifestyle/health/feeds/hscout/2005/03/18/hscout524605.html

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=65&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
INFANTS SUFFERING FROM COLIC GET RELIEF WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE

A study in Denmark compared the results of administeringChiropractic care or medication to infants between 2 and 10weeks of age who suffered from colic. The fifty infants chosen had suffered one or more violentspells of crying for three or more hours per day for at least fiveof the prior seven days. Twenty-five of the infants were givenspinal manipulation by a local Chiropractor and the others weregiven two weeks of dimethicone treatment. The parents in bothgroups were counselled on care and feeding. The results of thetreatments were recorded in daily diaries. After the third day of treatment, the spinal manipulationgroup showed an improvement in colic behavior greater thanthe improvement shown by the group treated with dimethicone. At eight to ten days, the difference in response in theChiropractic group was even more marked. Also of note: Dimethicone (also called simethicone) is commonlyprescribed for treatment of colic. The authors chose tocompare Chiropractic care with dimethicone because, asFrancine Margolius, R.N., Associate Professor MedicalUniversity of South Carolina, Charleston, comments, “it hasbeen shown to be no better than placebo treatment.”Also of note is the fact that nine of the infants dropped outof the dimethicone treatment group due to a worsening of theinfant’s symptoms. None of the infants treated with Chiropracticdropped out of care.SOURCE: http://www.fcer.org/html/news/colic.htm; http://ebn.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/3/2/42

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=64&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
EMPLOYERS WHO OFFER CHIROPRACTIC CARE COVERAGE WOULD SEE SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS, STUDY REPORTS

Employers who offer Chiropractic health plan benefits totheir employees can realize significant reductions in employeeutilization and overall treatment costs for back pain as comparedto employers who do not offer such coverage, accordingto a new study published in the October 2004 issue of theArchives of Internal Medicine. This is the first study to definitivelylink Chiropractic benefits to reductions in healthcare utilizationand costs. The study, sponsored by American Specialty Health in SanDiego, concluded that employees with Chiropractic health plancoverage incurred a 41% reduction in hospitalizations for backpain compared to those without this coverage, and also incurreda 37% reduction in use of expensive CT/MRI scans. The study resulted from a comparison of four years worth ofdata from 700,000 health plan members who had Chiropracticcoverage to 1 million members without the same coverage. One of the investigators in this study, Douglas Metz, D.C.,stated that “our study shows that systematic access to managedChiropractic care...can reduce key cost factors that drive upemployer health costs in traditional care settings.”The president and CEO of American Specialty Health,George DeVries, added his comments: “This study demonstratesthat Chiropractic coverage can be a powerful cost containmenttool for employers and health plans that are strugglingto keep the lid on escalating costs.”SOURCE: http://www.chiro.org/LINKS/ABSTRACTS/Chiropractic_Health_Plan_Benefits_Proven.shtml

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=63&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
TESTIMONY TO VETERANS AFFAIRS DOCUMENTS WISDOM OF CHOOSING CHIROPRACTIC FIRST

On March 2003, Dr. George McClelland , D.C., testifiedbefore the Department of Veterans Affairs about the efficacy andcost-savings related to Chiropractic care over conventional care formusculoskeletal problems. In his testimony, he noted that the bulk of studies he revieweddemonstrated lower costs for Chiropractic treatment, includingworkers’ compensation studies, databases from insurers and ananalysis by a health economist in Canada. In fact, he cited specificsavings estimated by Pran Manga, the Canadian health economist.Mr. Manga concluded that doubling the utilization of Chiropracticservices from 10% to 20% may realize savings as much as $770 millionin direct costs and $3.8 billion in indirect costs.Dr. McClelland also cited the findings of the 1974 CongressionalCommittee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce with regard to surgical necessity. This committee found that 17.6% of recommendations for surgery were not confirmed by second opinions.Using these figures to extrapolate the number of unnecessaryback surgeries in the U.S. would mean that annually, figures wouldapproach 44,000 unnecessary surgeries per year at a cost of $484 million. The CEO of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center inBoston summarized the gist of Dr. McClelland’s testimony thisway: “When all sources of error are added up, the likelihood that amishap will injure a patient in a hospital is at least three percentand probably much higher. This is a serious health problem. Whenone considers that a typical airline handles customers’ baggage at afar lower error rate than we handle the administration of drugs topatients, it is also an embarrassment.”SOURCE: www.chiro.org/LINKS/ABSTRACTS/Testimony_to_the_department_of_veterans_affairs.html

<trackback:ping>http://www.unityfamilychiropractic.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=62&PortalID=8&TabID=407</trackback:ping>
CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT

By Dr. Todd Joachim (Excerpt)Statistics don't lie. Thirty-one million Americans have low back pain at any given time. Each year, one half of all workingAmericans admit to varying degrees of back pain. One third ofall Americans over age 18 had a back problem in the past fiveyears severe enough for them to seek professional help. And thecost of this care is estimated to be a staggering $50 billion yearly. In the past year alone, more than 30 million American adultsand children have benefited from Chiropractic healthcare. 2) 75percent of low back injuries that are not treated, under-treated,or treated inappropriately have a second occurrence within 12months. 3) A recent multi-disciplinary study published in SpineJournal documented that spinal manipulation was superior toboth drugs and Acupuncture in the treatment of injuries thatresulted in chronic spine pain. Spinal manipulation was threetimes more effective than Acupuncture and nearly three timesmore effective than previously prescribed anti-inflammatories.In another recent study published in the British MedicalJournal, patients with low back pain treated with spinal manipulationfollowed by an appropriate exercise program were foundto have the greatest degree of improvement when compared toother forms of intervention. For these reasons it makes sense toconsult a qualified Chiropractic physician if you experience backpain.Dr. Todd Joachim is a Chiropractic physician who practices in Marion. He specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries utilizing conservative treatment, rehabilitative and preventive options.SOURCE: The Marion Star, January 15, 2005, by Dr. Todd Joachim, Guest Columnist
